The Astonished Gaze

The encounter between western countries and other cultures, first of all with Africa, then with America and finally with Oceania, was characterised by alternating attitudes, at time diametrically opposed. The Europeans, in searching for new lands to colonize, ” of new resources to exploit and of new markets, discovered worlds till then unknown .they were amazed on meeting Other World, by the colour of the skin, by the very evident diversity, by the very primitive habits and customs, by the precious metals and stones which they possesed, and by their works. However, the western world was not only fascinated, it was so repulsed by the practise of  sacrificial rites during which man were sacrificed to divinities, by the practise of cannibalism for ritual purposes, by the scalps of beaten enemies preserved as trophies of war and, in some cases, purposfully shrunk, by ritual self mutilation, by incision and by tattoos.
